People are Talking and People Want Immigration Reform?

Posted by Stephanie Valencia on May 31, 2011 at 10:45 AM EDT

On May 10th, President Obama issued a call to action to fix our broken immigration system so that it works for our 21st economic and national security needs. He asked Americans to elevate the debate on this issue and have a nation conversation about realistic solutions. Over the past three weeks, we?ve had hundreds of Americans in all parts of the country and all walks of life participate in conversations about realistic solutions to fixing our broken immigration system.

Here is just a sampling of some of the great roundtables that have happened over the last few weeks:

  • On May 24th Mayor Paul Bridges of Uvalda, GA held a roundtable with a dozen leaders in his town of 600 ? saying ?All I can say is IT WAS AWESOME! THANK YOU ALL for the idea of a Roundtable. People are talking and people want Immigration Reform.? (see photo below)

  • On May 11th in Dallas, Texas Assistant Secretary of State Jose Fernandez held a roundtable with business leaders talking about the imperative for business owners and leaders to be involved in the immigration reform debate. Bert Kaufman from Business Forward who attended the roundtable writes "The need to fix the broken immigration system is on top of mind for business leaders across the country. It is important to get outside of DC to listen to these folks because you learn just how seriously employers take the situation. This issue has come up, without fail, in every roundtable that I've participated in across the 20 cities I've visited over the past 5 months."
  • Also on May 11th, Catholic Charities of Dallas convened a roundtable with key community leaders to discuss how they can lend their voice to the conversation saying, ?We support the President?s initiative for this national conversation and will do what we can to promote more Roundtable discussions.?
  • On May 12th, Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer for the Obama Administration convened a roundtable with diverse stakeholders in Omaha, Nebraska (Yes, Omaha, Nebraska). In a blog post summarizing the event, Aneesh wrote, ?the message I heard was clear -- if we are to effectively compete in the global economy, we need access to the very best talent our communities can attract, especially in regions that lack the kind of talent concentration one finds in areas like Silicon Valley or Austin, TX.?
  • On May 20th, Cecilia Munoz, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs did a roundtable with key business leaders in Orlando, Florida discussing what immigration reform means to business owners. Cecilia said that, ?Leaders of the Orlando business community illustrated very powerfully that immigration reform is an economic imperative. CEOs and entrepreneurs in businesses both large and small reflected on both the human costs and the economic costs which add up every day that Congress fails to act on immigration reform. I am so encouraged by the level of engagement in the business community. ?
  • On May 24th, Aneesh Chopra held another roundtable with business leaders in the Silicon Valley and the importance reforming our immigration system is to our economy. In a blog post he wrote: ?Aneesh participated in a roundtable yesterday hosted by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group where nearly half of the executives in the room were immigrants. They were unanimous in their call for action in the high skilled area -- a top priority for the group, along with a new service campaign to connect the best and brightest in the Valley with kids in need. But they were also frustrated with our inability as a country to tackle these issues as it has been several years since they began such conversations.?
  • On May 25th a group of students from the University of Michigan convening a conversation to talk about what the broken immigration system means to them.

These are just a sampling of how everyday Americans are elevating the debate around fixing our broken immigration system. Our goal is to host at least one conversation in every single state. Join the conversation and host one today by visiting www.whitehouse.gov/immigrationaction.

Serving Those Who Serve Us

Posted by Katelyn Sabochik on May 30, 2011 at 01:34 PM EDT

This morning, Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, sent the email below to the White House email list encouraging all Americans to honor our brave men and women in uniform by supporting our military families and veterans.

If you didn?t get the email, be sure to sign up for the White House email list.

This Memorial Day, First Lady Michelle Obama and I are asking our fellow citizens to honor the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed so much for our country by supporting our military families and veterans.

Will you join me in sending a note of thanks to our military families? You can submit your message on JoiningForces.gov:

Our military families are true American heroes: they are parents who raise their kids alone while their spouse is deployed overseas, they are the grandparents who provide much needed support, and they are military kids who work hard in school while bravely awaiting their mom or dad's return from deployment. They serve our country bravely and without askingfor recognition for their sacrifices.

That's why the First Lady and I started Joining Forces, a national initiative to recognize, honor and support our military families.

As a military mom, I know that a simple act of kindness can make a difference in the lives of our military families and veterans. Whether you offer to babysit or carpool, or just take a moment to say thank you, everyone can do something to support our service members and their families.

We are working with employers, with communities, with faith leaders, with schools and so many others. We can all join forces.

At JoiningForces.gov you'll find lots of ways to get involved. You can find service opportunities in your area, send a message of support to military families, or tell us your own story of service:

http://www.JoiningForces.gov

To all of our men and women in uniform, our veterans and our military families: thank you, we are so grateful for your commitment and sacrifice.

Sincerely,

Jill

P.S. We've created a special email list for more frequent updates about the Joining Forces campaign.

Quotes of the day

??I?m sure at some point I will be going to Iowa,? Palin said during a visit to Fort McHenry in Baltimore. ?At some point.??

?Palin and her family were mobbed by television cameras after her arrival at Fort McHenry, the fort that famously defended Baltimore from a British assault during the War of 1812. The battle served as the inspiration for the national anthem, Francis Scott Key?s ?Star Spangled Banner.??

?While she declared herself ?satisfied? with the Republicans who are already in the process of campaigning, she said the field ?is going to change up a lot.??

***
?Palin gets mad when the ?media? cover bloopers she makes, like her coinage of the word ?refudiate.? The press?as distinct from the partisan media?-incorporates these errors into its lack-of-readiness narrative. Palin does not make a distinction between a political press corps that thinks she?s not ready and a tribal belief among some Democrats that she is not smart. She does not distinguish TMZ from PBS. In her world, Bill Maher is Katie Couric. The New York Times is Daily Kos. Palin seems to genuinely believe that the press is unremittingly hostile to her. She believes that her children have been subject to humiliation and harassment.

?Palin says that the people who cover politics for a living have a negative disposition toward her because of her faith. Plenty of evangelical candidates are given a fair shake by the press. Mike Huckabee?s candidacy was boosted because the press corps actively liked him. Tim Pawlenty holds nearly every position ascribed to Sarah Palin and is not mistreated by the press, nor is he ridiculed for his beliefs. And the media that allegedly mistreats Palin somehow remains obsessed with anything she does. Every utterance is a national news story; every tweet triggers news cycles full of analysis. Palin has redefined what it means to get ?free media.?

?On the campaign trail, she can be incredibly compelling. She forges an emotional bond with her audience, the type of bond that Mitt Romney has not managed to achieve. But until Palin figures out how to cross the plausibility threshold among the press and the Republican elites, she will remain at a disadvantage.?

***
?Is she giving a press conference today? or giving another interview? I don?t think so. She can?t ? or at least as far as I know she can?t. She works for Fox, and just as with any employee or someone on contract with another network, she is contractually obliged NOT to speak to others. For instance, when I was in Haiti, I could not interview CNN?s Dr. Sanjay Gupta or when I want to talk politics, I can?t interview CNN?s Donna Brazile. They work for another network. As far as I know, her contract is like every other media contract and that means it would be a breach of contract to speak to other media outlets. ** I have not seen her contract but assume it is the routine media contract. She is in an unusual situation in that we in the media have made her into a media topic by virtue of us always talking about her. She, of course, contributes to that intense interest by painting a bus and taking a tour and taking a tour to historic sites.

Where is her bus tour going ? You got me. My producer who talked to someone who works with her in order to set up the interview told me last night that he would not tell her. We were told to check their website for any information they are releasing. He said they don?t want the media following them and that includes us. Well?with the intense interest in her by everyone (almost everyone) in the media, that is, I suspect, going to happen. The media will probably be in hot pursuit.?

Is Microsoft's Future in Data-as-a-Service?

The "realist" view on Microsoft's future is that Windows and Microsoft Office licenses will continue to be the company's bread and butter, and that enterprise-focused cloud initiatives like Azure and Office 365 will supplement this growth. In this view Microsoft's struggles in mobile, the rapid growth of Apple and the proliferation of Linux aren't real threats to the company. After all, even though OSX and Linux are growing faster than Windows, Windows is still growing. And it's too early to write Microsoft out of the mobile game, before its partnership with Nokia comes to fruition and before it even releases its tablets. It's a reasonable view of where things are going.

Then there's the other vision, which we might call the Cassandra version.

In this visoin, Microsoft loses out in the operating system wars, Office becomes less relevant in the market and Microsoft's mobile ambitions were doomed from the start. This view sees Office 365 losing out to Google Docs and Azure losing out to the plethora of alternatives. Bing might be Microsoft's only hope in this view, and even that's a long shot.

TechCrunch's MG Siegler has called Microsoft's Online Services "the worst Internet startup ever" because of its massive losses ($726 million last quarter).

Bing gained traction this year, but may already be slipping in popularity. And as Siegler wrote last year "While Microsoft is monetizing Bing, they're also spending a huge amount advertising it to get the eyeballs they eventually monetize."

But what if Bing's real value is in its APIs and SDKs, not its consumer facing side?

The comments of our poll on Google's pending closure of several APIs including this comment from STHayden:

At work we wanted to use the translation api but they don't allow storage in a db and don't have any comercial license. We went with bing because they had a commercial license we could pay for.

We've mentioned before that some new startups are taking an API-only approach to doing business. Microsoft obviously isn't going to get rid of its Bing branded sites, but would it make sense for the company to focus on its Bing APIs as a revenue generator? It's an unproven model, and new APIs continually popping up, but it's an interesting possibility. Microsoft could become a big time data broker and provider of "plumbing" for applications and services that run on any number of platforms and devices.

We've covered some of Microsoft's other big data projects, but it's not clear yet how the company plans to turn big data into big money. Targeting developers could be just the ticket.

Microsoft does have one initiative along these lines already: Windows Azure DataMarket, which lets companies sell data through REST-based APIs.

Is Microsoft's Future in Data-as-a-Service?

Hackers Attack PBS Website, Leak Passwords, And Publish Story About Tupac Living In New Zealand

Hackers Attack PBS Website, Leak Passwords, And Publish Story About Tupac Living In New Zealand

by Jon Bershad | 1:28 am, May 30th, 2011

Well, here?s a story this weekend that we know for sure is the handiwork of computer hackers. The official website for the US Public Broadcasting Service has been hacked into with the hackers publishing a story (which was finally taken down as this post was being written) about the deceased rappers Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls both being alive and hiding in New Zealand. As silly as that sounds, the hackers have also leaked email addresses and passwords for tons of employees as well as an SQL database with information on a large part of the site.

The hackers appear to be from the same group, Lulz Security, that attacked Fox Network at the beginning of this month releasing information about their employees as well as potential contestants for the upcoming American version of X-Factor. The group took credit with an image they put up on PBS?s site under the url ?http://www.pbs.org/lulz/.? Here it is below:

They then linked to the Tupac story on their Twitter page and followed that up with links to PBS? information.

Here is the full text of the now removed article (which was credited to ?PBS Web Tech?:

?Prominent rapper Tupac has been found alive and well in a small resort in New Zealand, locals report. The small town ? unnamed due to security risks ? allegedly housed Tupac and Biggie Smalls (another rapper) for several years. One local, David File, recently passed away, leaving evidence and reports of Tupac?s visit in a diary, which he requested be shipped to his family in the United States.

?We were amazed to see what David left behind,? said one of sisters, Jasmine, aged 31. ?We thought it best to let the world know as we feel this doesn?t deserve to be kept secret.?

David, aged 28, was recently the victim of a hit-and-run by local known gangsters. Having suffered several bullet wounds on his way home from work, David was announced dead at the scene. Police found the diary in a bedside drawer.

?Naturally we didn?t read the diary,? one officer states. ?We merely noted the request to have it sent to a US address, which we did to honor the wishes of David.?

Officials have closed down routes into the town and will not speculate as to whether Tupac or Biggie have been transported to another region or country. Local townsfolk refuse to comment on exactly how long or why the rappers were being sheltered; one man simply says ?we don?t talk about that here.?

The family of David File have since requested that more action be taken to arrest those responsible for the shooting. ?David was a lovely, innocent boy? reported his mother. ?When he moved to New Zealand, he?d never been happier.?

His brother Jason requested that one part of David?s diary be made public in an attempt to decipher it. ?Near the end,? Jason says, ?there?s a line that reads ?yank up as a vital obituary?, which we?ve so far been unable to comperhend.?

David?s girlfriend, Penny, did not wish to make a statement.?

With rumors about Tupac secretly being alive having existed for years, the story from a reputable outlet like PBS has begun to spread across the Internet already. So, while their tech employees have presumably been working hard to erase the hack, people like Teresa Gorman, NewsHour?s Social Media and Online Engagement worker has been trying to stem the tide on Twitter.

Surely not an ideal way to spend a holiday weekend.

Video: My first appearance on the Tom Sullivan Show

posted at 12:00 pm on May 29, 2011 by Ed Morrisseyprinter-friendly

This weekend, I made my debut on Fox Business Channel?s Tom Sullivan Show as a talking head, and as you?ll see, I had a pretty good time. Sullivan matched me up with FBC reporter Adam Shapiro and media strategist Erica Payne, who represented the liberal point of view in the debate. Sullivan posed the question of political risk in pursuing Medicare reform in the first part of the segment, noting that people want government to spend less but don?t want their benefits cut. He also argued that Democrats are better at messaging to the latter point, even though I argue that benefit cuts aren?t necessarily what?s happening ? and both Shapiro and I point out that it won?t affect current Medicare recipients in any case:

As I note, it?s easier to demagogue than it is to argue, and Payne gives a brilliant demonstration of this in her reply to me by saying that Republicans just want to abandon seniors. It?s a lively exchange and probably the most fun of the segment. We also debate the Newt Gingrich tempest in a Tiffany?s teapot and the Chrysler bailout claims of having paid in full the taxpayer interventions, which are ludicrous on their face.

I may be coming back for more appearances on Tom?s show, so be sure to keep your eyes open. This will replay again at 7 pm ET tonight if you want to catch the full show.

The Startup Genome Project Examines the Science of Startups

startupgenome.jpgEarlier this year, the Startup Genome Project launched a survey aiming to to investigate "the science of startups." Much like the Human Genome Project's attempts to crack the human genetic code, the Startup Genome Project hoped to be able to uncover the "innovation code" that drives the success of Silicon Valley technology startups.

"Despite the supreme economic importance of scalable startups, we still don't understand the patterns of successful creation," say the project organizers. "More than 90% of startups fail, due predominantly to self-destruction rather than competition. For the less than 10% of startups that do succeed, most encounter a handful of near death experiences along the way."

Through the survey, the Startup Genome Project hoped to be able to have some "hard data" to uncover why some succeed and why some don't. And now the results are in with a 67-page report based on the responses and profiles of over 650 startups. The report examines what's worked - and what hasn't worked - for these particular companies.

Lessons Learned from the Startup Genome Project

Some of the lessons gleaned from the survey seem quite obvious: Founders that have helpful mentors and learn from other startup thought leaders raise 7 times more money and have 3.5 times better user growth, for example.

And some of the findings confirm what are commonly held beliefs, such as the drawbacks of being a single person founder. Solo founders take 3.6 times as long to reach scale stage as do founding teams of 2 and they are 2.3 times less likely to pivot.

But many of the findings offer some pretty intriguing insights into other beliefs, such as the importance of being able to pivot. For example, startups that pivot once or twice raise 2.5 times more money and have 3.6 better growth than startups that pivot more than 2 times or that never pivot.

There are plenty of lessons to be learned with the data from the survey - even if it's just nuggets like startups need 2-3 times longer to validate their market than most founders expect. There are important details here about why startups fail - not working at the project full-time, for example, not having a technical co-founder, or not having the right team composition for the type of startup.

Types of Startups

The report breaks down these startup types into the following:

The Automizer (Type 1)
Common characteristics: self-service customer acquisition, consumer focused, product centric, fast execution, often automize a manual process.

The Social Transformer (Type 1N)
Common characteristics: self service customer acquisition, critical mass, runaway user growth, winner take all markets, complex ux, network effects, typically create new ways for people to interact.

The Integrator (Type 2)
Common characteristics: lead generation with inside sales reps, high certainty, product centric, early monetization, SME focused, smaller markets, often take innovations from consumer Internet and rebuild it for smaller enterprises.

The Challenger (Type 3)
Common characteristics: enterprise sales, high customer dependency, complex & rigid markets, repeatable sales process.

Along with the release of the data from the Startup Genome Report, the authors are releasing a benchmark test that will help give entrepreneurs a sense of which personality type they fall into, and then based on the data from the Startup Genome Project, advice on what to focus on.

A Twitter Whodunit: Big Government Posts Lewd Photo Claiming It?s From Rep. Anthony Weiner

by Frances Martel | 6:21 pm, May 28th, 2011

In what could develop into one of the most bizarre media stories in recent memory, Big Government is reporting that Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) attempted to send a close-up photo ? that?s extreme in more ways than one ? to a user via Twitter. But the method by which this story has been reported, with an anonymous byline and threats that there may be more incriminating photos, serve as a reminder that Andrew Breitbart?s editors and writers do not aim to abide by accepted journalistic standards.

The story, published at 12:24 AM anonymously, notes that Weiner previously had tweeted that his Facebook account had been hacked, but the photo and the Twitter account to which he allegedly directed the photo are nowhere to be found. Thus far, Rep. Weiner has not commented. To make matters much stranger, Big Government proprietor Breitbart tweeted at the Congressman to own up to it, as ?we have much more.?

Let?s start at the beginning: Rep. Weiner, who often sends out lighthearted tweets, complained early this morning of a Tivo technical difficulty, followed by a Facebook hacking:

Innocent enough. Somewhere in between all these tweets, however, an anonymous writer on Big Government under the pseudonym ?Publius? claims the account sent out the following picture to a Twitter user they chose not to identify.

The URL that Big Government provided in their original does, in fact, lead to Rep. Weiner?s account, though the picture has since been deleted. And no, this is, apparently, not where the story ends. Big Government was the only outlet to have original screenshots? and, yes, for the most part, only right-wing outlets have followed up (one imagines that, post-Sherrod, it?s going to take evidence from several more places for the mainstream media to may attention to this).

Meanwhile, Breitbart himself has taken to eliciting a response from the Congressman on Twitter: ?Just call it ?constituency outreach? and be done with it. We have much more. Need confirmation or denial.? That?s a fairly loaded tweet. Why would Breitbart have ?much more? on Rep. Weiner?

Now, there are three ways this story could go: either Rep. Weiner did, in fact, post these photos and immediately remove them, or someone posted them as him, or they were never posted at all. Unlike the Rep. Chris Lee scandal, there?s no face to the name, which makes the entire ordeal far trickier. As Rep. Weiner tweeted that he had been hacked, that should be the first option, as the presumption of innocence is key. The Photoshop possibility exists only if the URLs ?Publius? posted were fabricated, which would raise the question of who would be motivated to do such a thing, how they did it, and whether they?re feeding Breitbart?s anonymous writer information.

Then there?s the option that the photo was posted by Rep. Weiner onto his account, and not a hacker, in which case he?d have to have the resilience of Sen. David Vitter to get out of this one politically viable. And taking the evidence at face value, Rep. Weiner has some serious questions to answer. For one, how does a Facebook hack lead to a photo being posted on Twitter?

Then there?s the possibility Weiner didn?t post these pictures, in which case the only venue to actually have them would be very suspect. This option would have required the Breitbart outlet to find a yFrog URL for a deleted photo from 15 hours and 46 minutes ago, find a disembodied penis in some sexy underwear, do some Photoshop magic and call it a day? which raises its own set of questions, among them ?Why??, ?Really?? and ?Seriously?!? Why would Andrew Breitbart, who already faces an uphill credibility battle? wrongfully or otherwise? thanks to Shirley Sherrod (and, he claims, Glenn Beck) put it all in the line, particularly in such a sleazy way?

Those who question most of what he publishes have already begun accusing him of fabrication, but many always do, regardless of the issue at hand. Just as the original claim requires more sources to corroborate it, so does the kneejerk claim that it?s a Nixonian conspiracy. Breitbart is anything if not smart about his career moves, and a theoretical fabrication like this seems beneath even him. But how would he have ?much more? on the Congressman on such a happenstance occurrence, and isn?t it a little bit too convenient that Congressman Weiner would have a sexy pic scandal? Also notable is the fact that this post?s author, Publius, is entirely anonymous. Why didn?t someone with a real identity and something to lose sign off on this?

Either way, we can all probably agree on one thing: this entire ordeal is going to inevitably lead to a whole series of ?Weiner? jokes? But this may not be a laughing matter, we either have a serious media or political scandal on our hands. we will soon see which one.

Could Kucinich turn WA-01 red in 2012?

posted at 2:15 pm on May 28, 2011 by Ed Morrisseyprinter-friendly

Dennis Kucinich spent last weekend about as far from Washington DC as he could get, and almost as far from his Cleveland district as well, to check out suburban Seattle. Kucinich will likely lose his Cleveland district in Ohio?s new Congressional map, which means he won?t have any hope of returning to Congress while living in Ohio. The state of Washington will pick up a seat, and Rep. Jay Inslee of Washington?s 1st CD is mulling over a run for governor rather than a return to Congress in next year?s election.

Kucinich obviously sees the D+9 district as a great landing place for an Ohio carpetbagger, especially with Inslee leaving the seat open. But could Kucinich instead turn an easy hold into a Republican takeaway? A new poll by Survey USA suggests that very outcome:

Incumbent Democratic Congressman Jay Inslee, from Washington State?s 1st Congressional District, is well liked and surrenders solid Democratic footing in that district were he to run for Governor, according to this latest KING5 News poll conducted by SurveyUSA. ?

Given the choice between having a representative in Congress who shares one?s values or who has roots in the community, shared values is 3:1 preferred to roots. Yet at the time time, voters by 6:1 tell SurveyUSA that Kucinich would do a worse job representing them in Congress than someone who has lived in the District longer, indicative of the headwinds that an outsider, transplanted into the District for the purpose of running, would encounter.

Inslee?s favorability in the survey is +24 (56/32), not surprising considering that he?s on his sixth term representing the district. Kucinich, on the other hand, scores a -25 favorability (21/46). Kucinich?s favorability among Democrats is positive ? barely, at 32/31. It?s a laughable 17/53 among independents, and 12/47 among self-described moderates. He also starts off severely negative on entrenched support/opposition at 15/38 regardless of opponent. Only 31% of self-professed liberals would vote for Kucinich above all other candidates; 57% want to shop around a while.

Even in this D+9 district in a Democratic state, Kucinich?s kooky ?Department of Peace? initiative gets poor marks at 34/48, and among independents it?s a disastrous 22/59. Moderates in the district seem to understand that we already have a State Department for diplomatic efforts; they balk at the idea by a 30/51 margin. Kucinich?s main platform doesn?t get support from any demographics except Democrats (52/28) and liberals (56/22).

Kucinich?s attempt to carpetbag into a district 2000 miles away is a desperate attempt to justify his grip on power in Washington DC, a transparent effort that will get soundly rejected by WA-01. If Democrats want to hand this seat to a Republican, they could hardly do better than putting a lifelong Cleveland politician on the ballot.

UK Comedy: British Justice Secretary snoozes while POTUS speaks

posted at 9:25 pm on May 27, 2011 by Jazz Shawprinter-friendly

There?s no denying that President Obama?s recent whirlwind tour through the UK and the Emerald Isles produced a wealth of entertainment options or annoyances ? depending who you asked ? for our Special Relationship Partners across the pond. Whether he was stealing Doc Emmit Brown?s ?back in time? thunder, stepping on the Queen?s protocol with a poorly paced toast, or informing the Irish that they were an occupied nation, plenty of fun was had by all. (As a side note, if Obama provides Ed Morrissey with any more freebies for the Obamateurism of the Day series, Ed may wind up having to vote for him just to keep the material flowing.)

But there is, as the saying goes, no accounting for taste. Some folks just can?t seem to keep their eyelids propped open for the West Wing Comedy Tour, no matter how golden the material. Brought to us courtesy of The Blaze, it seems that British Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke was not going to let a little thing like a speech by the American President cut into his nap time.

Sweet dreams, sir. Trust me? I listened to the entire thing back home and you really didn?t miss all that much.

Getting SMART About Energy Efficiency

Getting SMART About Energy Efficiency

Posted by Mike Connor on May 27, 2011 at 03:51 PM EDT

As the second largest producer of hydropower in the United States, the Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Reclamation has a key role to play in President Obama?s blueprint for a secure energy future. Reclamation?s staff of engineers, biologists, hydrologists and other professionals are working tirelessly to conserve water and improve energy efficiencies at our projects across 17 Western states.

Recently, Reclamation announced$24 million in WaterSMARTWater and Energy Efficiency Grants for 54 projects. This federal funding, when combined with other non-federal resources, will total more than $76 million in projects that are expected to save more than 15 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough for more than 1,300 households.

The East Columbia Basin Irrigation Company in Washington, for example, will use its WaterSMART grant to help convert more than 85,000 feet of open ditch to pipelines to address seepage losses. The improvements are expected to result in a water savings of 7,850 acre-feet each year and 4.3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

By working together on projects like these, we can find more effective ways to use the water available in the West to protect jobs, enhance the use of clean energy and promote the sustainable use of limited resources.

As drought, climate change, growing populations, energy demands and basic environmental needs stress our finite water and energy supplies, these WaterSMART grants will save energy and help America become less dependent on sources of energy that are costly, non-renewable and harm the environment.

Rush Limbaugh Defends Roger Ailes And Fox News Viewers From Rolling Stone ‘Hit Piece’

by Matt Schneider | 5:41 pm, May 26th, 2011

Fox News chief Roger Ailes is being profiled a lot lately, and now Rolling Stone magazine took a crack with their article ?How Roger Ailes Built the Fox News Fear Factory.? Yet Rush Limbaugh has seen enough and took on the ?arrogance and smugness? of the writer, and defended the intelligence of Fox News viewers in the process.

Rush read the following paragraph from the article as he attempted to dismantle every claim within it:

?According to recent polls, Fox News viewers are the most misinformed of all news consumers. They are 12 percentage points more likely to believe the stimulus package caused job losses, 17 points more likely to believe Muslims want to establish Shariah law in America, 30 points more likely to say that scientists dispute global warming, and 31 points more likely to doubt President Obama?s citizenship. In fact, a study by the University of Maryland reveals, ignorance of Fox viewers actually increases the longer they watch the network. That?s because Ailes isn?t interested in providing people with information, or even a balanced range of perspectives. Like his political mentor, Richard Nixon, Ailes traffics in the emotions of victimization.?

Rush suggested every opinion the writer was attempting to mock Fox News viewers for having (with the exception of Obama?s citizenship) was actually the accurate position on each issue. In other words, in Rush?s opinion, Fox News viewers are ?much more connected to reality? than anyone at Rolling Stone. Rush concluded:

?Who in truth is worthless to news. Rolling Stone. This reporter. . . . Who in truth has been programmed to believe things that are in no way associated with the truth? This guy who wrote this hit piece at Rolling Stone and obviously their readers who lap this crap up.?
