Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels Receives 16 Stitches After Being Struck By Gym Door

Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, who many see as a potential frontrunner in the 2012 Republican nomination race, suffered an accident on Friday as, while leaving a workout at a local gym, he was struck by a door so hard he needed 16 stitches on his forehead to repair the damage. Reports say despite the unfortunate setback, the governor is in good spirits and intends to return to work soon.

The story, according to CNN, is that Daniels was taken by surprise by a swinging door as he exited the gym. He was taken to a local Indianapolis hospital for stitches and released, and doctors expect a fairly quick recovery. CNN also had some colorful details on the matter:

His spokeswoman Jane Jankowski confirmed to CNN that the governor told her he ?uttered a creative expletive? when the accident occurred. He did not provide any further details on the exact nature.

At the hospital Daniels, known for his penny-pinching ways and sense of humor, asked the doctor if he was going to be charged for each of the stitches he was receiving, Jankowski said. He was assured he would not be.

If Daniels was intending to remain under the radar for a month or two until the rest of the current Republican field fizzled out, he now has a good reason to? not that his optics were considered that great before cracking his forehead open. That said, despite his detractors dismissing him for not having the rhetorical horsepower to compete with President Obama, many political commentators who have taken a ?meek shall inherit the earth? attitude towards the 2012 race have chosen Daniels as one of the frontrunners along with Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty. Now he has a good excuse not to share a debate stage (if any are open) with Rick Santorum or Herman Cain.
